Look & Style:
First things first, define your look and style that you want to portray on your Instagram page. For instance, I love a clean, minimal look with a white background and I love adding a few lifestyle products in like notebooks or my macbook. You can really create a beautiful image from anything you have lying around at home. So that is my “theme” for my Instagram feed. Having a specific look is probably my most important rule when it comes to Instagram. Because people follow you because they like what they see and they want to see more of what you have to offer, so if you are constantly changing between styles and even types of content then people will very quickly forget the reason why they followed you in the beginning and they will even unfollow you. So always ensure that you have a clear vision of what you want you feed to look like and stick to that. I often delete photos that I had posted because I realise that they don’t fit in with my overall look. It is extremely important that your first 6-9 photos are always beautiful and portray who you are and what you blog is about. This is incredibly important, because people are unlikely to keep scrolling down your feed if the initial 6 images don’t catch their attention and give them something to want to keep scrolling. Have a look at my Photography Essentials to see how I get the look for my Instagram feed. I know not everyone is into photography or have the necessary skills or equipment to take awesome photos, so do yourself a favour and invest in a couple of styled stock photos, you will be able to reuse them and they will really improve your look and feel and ultimately increase your following. People like pretty pictures…remember that.
This is something that I have recently discovered the importance of. I have always posted regularly, but never more than once a day. And I started seeing a decline in the amount of followers I used to get. So I decided to up my game a little at a time and I started posting twice a day. And I could see a difference immediately. You have to remember, that when you post something, not all your followers are going to see that post, so post as often as you can. About 2-4 times a day is sufficient. You also don’t want to spam all your followers, so make sure that you space out your posts nicely. I often post one mid morning and then again early evening. This way I target people who are scrolling through their Instagram while they are taking a break from work and also people who are on their way home from work, using public transport and wanting to kill time while flipping through their Instagram. In also ensures that everyone from around the world gets to see my posts. I don’t have followers that only live in South Africa, many of my followers are from the U.S or Australia, so posting at different times during the day ensures that everyone who follows me from around the world can see my posts. Remember the more of your own followers see you post and engage with your posts, the more likely you are to gain new followers through these people.
Interaction is so important.I can’t stress this enough. This applies to both you interacting with other instagrammers as well people interacting with you on your feed. In order to grow your following, it is vital that you are interacting with other people on Instagram. Everyday, comment on at least 10 other profiles of people who are in a similar niche as you are. This will not only help you build up a bit of a network with other Instagrammers or bloggers but it will also help them to follow you as well as their followers to click through to your feed. Don’t just send them a smiley face or right nice! But interact with them, read their post and give meaningful feedback. People appreciate that and they will reciprocate.
Whenever you post something that has something to do with a brand, tag them. This way they can discover you and it also opens you up to them reposting your image. Getting featured by a big brand can boost your following immensely.
We all know hashtags are important. They help people to find your posts and can ultimately lead to people following you. But how do you know which hashtags to use? It is important to always keep your hashtags relevant to your content, don’t just go around hashtagging every word you can think of. Look at bigger bloggers in your niche and look at which hashtags they use.
Some of my favourite foodie hashtags are:
#feedfeed (remember to tag them @feedfeed as well)

Promote you Instagram:
Lastly, but definitely not least. Promote your Instagram! Ask your blog readers to follow you on Instagram. Use your Facebook page to promote your Instagram page, or even send out a tweet with a link to your Instagram page. Use every opportunity you get to mention you Instagram page (see what I just did right there) and you will make people curious to see what all the fuss is about.
